Creative Live! Cam Notebook Pro
Excellent mid level cam for the money
The Bottom Line: If you get a good price under 40, buy it. It's a great little cam for a good price and has everything you need. I bought this to upgrade my Creative Live Cam IM, which was fine, but I was tired of the headset thing.
This is a good mid level entry in the consumer webcam category. It has 600x800 video resolution, which is about one step above standard VGA resolution. It's not the best, but it's better than the worst, as far as video quality.
The software it comes with is standard fare, it does have video FX which allows you to appear in the camera with a box of popcorn on your head, or snowflakes floating around you, etc etc etc. Lots of cute special effects.
This model, unlike my previous one, has audio FX as well. This allows you to speak into the cam and your voice is distorted, like a duck voice, deep voice, chipmunk, etc etc etc. Kind of fun the first couple of times.
The focus is manual, it is located on the front of the camera. The actual camera is a nice size, it's made for laptops, so it's compact and has a carry case. It sits on top of your laptop display, has a spring loaded clip thing that holds it on. The clip also allows you to put the cam on the side of the monitor, something I couldn't do with my old desktop egg-shaped webcam.
The controls are easy to learn, and if you are lazy, you can just set it to auto, and it will adjust the exposure, light, gain, etc, til you have a good picture.
It does work pretty well in dim light, I use it at night on my back deck, and provided you have a decent light source, it will adjust the cam so you can be seen in it.
In darker modes, it does get grainy of course, but that is to be expected with a cam in this price range.
It has a bult in microphone, which I really enjoy. I tired quickly of dragging around the headset, putting it on and plugging it in, taking it off if you have to go answer the door, etc.
So, I was primarily concerned with the mic feature when shopping for this. It does work well, and it has an easy setup for the audio controls as well as video.
I think I got a great deal, it had a mail in rebate at a big box store, and I would definitely recommend this to someone in the market for a decent low to mid level cam.

Strengths:
A lot of features in a small package
Weaknesses:
Can be really tough to get it up and going. Had to reinstall twice to finally make it work
Posted Jan 4, 2007 - This product has a lot of really nice features. It's the tiniest stand alone camera I have ever seen. It can be a surveillance camera and even do remote monitoring. It can capture video and pictures to send to family and friends. We had a lot of fun at Christmas sending Video cards of our family, tree and decorations. I love to be able to talk to and SEE my daughter 4000 miles away. It is at such a great price I was able to buy a few so we can all see each other even though we live far away from each other. I bought one for my youngest daughter and her best friend so I can actually make a phone call after school without asking her to get off the phone first. Teenagers! I have to say, even though I am very computer literate, it really took some time to get it up and running. Definitely NOT plug and play. I was thinking about getting one for my Mom but she would never be able to get it right on her own. Even my oldest daughter had a hard time and she's a computer native. In conclusion, when you finally get it right it is a nice camera and web cam and it is great for traveling. goo |
